Our Environment Is Our Legacy
Wisconsin is home to environmental pioneers like Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Senator Gaylord Nelson, all of whom understood that our natural resources are something special, to be respected and protected. Unfortunately, Republican Legislators don’t seem to share that vision.
Over the past few years, we have had detrimental attacks on our precious natural resources.
President Trump has proposed eliminating restoration funding for the Great Lakes and is threatening to leave the critical Paris Climate Agreement. At the same time, Wisconsin's Republicans are going so far as to eliminate the popular Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine.
We’ve seen devastating cuts made to the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) scientists, increased efforts to privatize water and lands, and elimination of all funding for our state parks. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
To make matters worse - Wisconsin’s drinking water is in danger. Which means the health of our residents is also in danger.
According to research funded by the DNR to study pollution problems, one third of the wells in Kewaunee County were found to be unsafe for drinking water. Further studies into groundwater contamination in the area are pending.
Additionally, in places like Milwaukee, Racine, Manitowoc, Kenosha, and Marathon counties, where lead pipes are still regularly used for public drinking water, residents are significantly more at risk for health dangers associated with water contamination. A 2008 study found that lead service lines account for between 50 and 75% of lead contamination in public tap water. A worrying statistic to say the least, when nearly 176,000 lead pipelines are still in use across our state.
And still Republican Legislators would prefer to outsource our drinking water, rather than make necessary changes and addressing the problems at hand.
Tell our legislators: it's time to take action to protect Wisconsin's families and ensure safe drinking water statewide!
